What is the ExAC Section 2?
The Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) Section 2 is a critical component of the licensure process, assessing a candidate's competency in applying the National Building Code of Canada, understanding life safety principles, and integrating sustainability considerations into design.
It encompasses:
-
Building Code (NBC 2020).
-
Life Safety.
-
Sustainability.
The ExAC is a practice-based examination, meaning success largely depends on a candidate's practical experience gained during their internship and exposure to various project stages. It evaluates the understanding and application of architectural principles, standards, and practices specifically relevant to the Canadian context. To pass any section of the ExAC, candidates must achieve a score of 65% or higher.

Objectives Breakdown
Our course covers the essential topics of ExAC Section 2, aligning with the official General and Specific Objectives to ensure comprehensive preparation.
National Building Code of Canada
National Building Code of Canada
This section focuses on the comprehensive understanding and application of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2020) and the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB 2020). You will learn the scope and application of the NBC to building design, construction, and occupancy, including identifying relevant parts for various building types and referenced standards. The course covers applying minimum standards of NBC Part 3 (for larger/complex buildings) to classification, construction, fire safety, floor area safety, barrier-free design, sound transmission, exits, and health requirements. It also addresses applying prescriptive requirements of NBC Part 9 (for housing and small buildings) concerning structural design, safety, health, and envelope design. A key component is understanding how to achieve design compliance using alternative solutions, including identifying proper application, Code objectives (such as safety, health, accessibility, fire and structural protection, and environment), functional statements, and documentation required for filing. You will also apply NECB requirements to the design process and construction documents for projects, focusing on energy efficiency.
Life Safety
Integrated within the National Building Code objectives, this theme emphasizes critical aspects of life safety in building design. You will interpret Code requirements concerning fire safety, including fire protection features incorporated during construction, and the ongoing maintenance and use of these features. Understanding requirements for exits, occupant safety, and the protection of buildings from fire is paramount. The course also covers Code requirements related to health and accessibility, ensuring buildings are safe and usable for all occupants.
Sustainability
This section includes an understanding of sustainable design principles as they relate to building codes and energy efficiency. While the NBC 2020 primarily focuses on minimum acceptable measures for safety, health, accessibility, and structural/fire protection, it also includes "environment" as one of its five objectives, and the NECB is directly aimed at improving energy efficiency, a core aspect of sustainability. This theme ensures you understand how code compliance contributes to environmentally responsible building practices and energy performance.
